The sun was out when Charlie opened her eyes, cursing herself for falling asleep. The repetitive motion of the swells and the drone of the engine had seduced her. Rubbing her eyes, she moved across to the port window, where she looked at the shore, trying to figure their location. From the angle of the sun, she estimated they had already rounded the southernmost point of the island and were running north and east now. Looking at the barren lava, she guessed they were following the coast by Volcano National Park. A small shack placed at the end of Chain of Craters Road confirmed her estimate.

She remembered the nine o’clock rendezvous with her uncle and started thinking about how to get out of this with both of them alive. Again, she looked around the cabin for anything she might use as a weapon besides the screwdriver she had already stashed. The breaker box was behind a cabinet door, but she knew disabling the boat could only lead to bigger trouble. If they found themselves taken by a current, the next stop would be Tahiti. She closed the door and sat back on the settee with her head in her hands. Feeling the first tears of hopelessness fall down her cheek, she lifted her head and swore to herself that she would see this through. Yoshido and his men could not be allowed to claim the treasure. She wasn’t sure what he intended, but there were likely two options, and neither benefited Hawaii. Either he would take the money back to Japan, which would remove the treasure from Hawaii, or he’d use it to buy every inch of land on the islands, in effect annexing them for his own use.

There was movement above, and she looked out the windows overlooking the cockpit. One of the men was climbing down the ladder. He stepped off, turned, and opened one of the coolers recessed in the deck. She looked away, but she heard the sound of a key turning in the lock and the bolt opening. She stayed where she was. Overpowering him or escaping were not yet options.

She was surprised when he handed her a sandwich and a bottle of water.

“Da boss says we’ll be there in half an hour.”

She glanced out the window. Land remained on their port side, though the direction of the sunlight indicated they had reached the other side of the island. Looking up at the hills, she could see the grid-like pattern of a subdivision and the rectangular roofs of the houses, spaced evenly in the breaks of the lush landscape. They were past Kalapana. Knowing there was no point in making enemies, she accepted the food, unwrapped the sandwich and started eating. The man grunted and left. By the time she had finished, they had slowed and she moved over to the starboard window. They had entered a small bay, and a few minutes later, she could see the diminutive figure of her uncle on the dock.
